Your previous English teacher can locate your email. NEW Whirlies should access the Reeves tii and Remind document for class ID and Enrollment key information. We're increasing our understanding of Plot, Mood, and Symbolism (ppt) along with analyzing the differences between commercial fiction and literature (ppt) before continuing our investigation into how authors present their senses of culture and heritage into their writing. Doe to weather associated with Hurricane Florence, our vocabulary quiz is postponed to the next class meeting/ next day of school. Keep in mind you already have List 2 and should start that Monday regardless! 9/10 At the beginning fo the week, we've started our Anchor texts and vocabulary work (attachments!). We will finish "Everyday Use" before Wednesday's test and hold Art Friday with work by Romare Bearden! I will accept the vocabulary homework on quiz day, currently scheduled for Fridays, but subject to change with significant weather events. The vocabulary list contains NINE lists taking us to the end of the quarter, so "I was absent" is not a good enough reason to have missed this assignment! We also completed (or are assigned to complete) "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. The text can be found here. 9/17 We've begun studying character and characterization using Madame Loisel in "The Necklace". Please refer to the linked title to complete your work or re-read something you missed. 10/01 This week we are consistent in our anchor text activities on "the Lottery Ticket" by Anton Checkov and complete reading and analyzing "The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses" by Bessie Head. We will have answered TBQ's (honors) along with completing some STEALs and a Plot diagram. We ended the week with some videos! The first three videos highlight the different types of irony. The last video is the video we watched for Art Friday. If you were not here, DO view these! For the last: Use the video viewing guide attachment; stop at 3:3o to take some notes on how you feel and reflect on what you saw and heard to make you feel that way. Resume and complete the guide. Enjoy! Let's keep in mins that some of our classmates are from the region and may need some support as we look at some of the atrocities civil war- not so civil- brings to its people. We will start with the webquest, attributes of memoir, and some background notes. Text reading should begin next week, courtesy of Hurricane Michael and PreACT. Look to the right for webquest links and powerpoints (later this week). 10/22- Benchmarks Monday and Tuesday with a side of quotation marks (ppt to the right). We will also look at soe excerpts from memoirs connected to Japan as we refine our understanding of the use and purpose of a memoir in preparation to read A Long Way Gone. Art Friday will likely connect to either Sierra Leone or Japan. Thank goodness for global literature! 10/29- This week we have our major vocabulary assessment. We have our study guide on Monday, classwide review Tuesday, and TEST (not a quiz) on lists 1-7 Wednesday. Be sure to complete the study guide before the exam. Use Mrs. Carlisle's review slides from her website to help your completion. 12/3- Ohmygoodness! I have been horrible about updating. We are reading A Long Way Gone and are about halfway through the book in both standard and honors classes. By the end of this week, Standard should have completed reading through Chapter 12 and Honors is chapter 16. Your study guides should reflect this completion as well. We are also deep into our vocabulary studies. Honors vocab list is to the right for your downloading pleasure. We are looking at snowpocolypse, folks, and I expect we will be out for a long while. Vocab quizzes are still on Fridays. We are also working on our PSA which is tentatively due December 14 but will have to be adjusted according to snow time; I will try to upload those handouts over the weekend. |
